04/04/15 Woods Reservoir
I decided to drive down to woods yesterday. I haven’t fished here in 5-6 years but heard it is good for spring crappie. We fished from around 10am – 4pm. With the cold front I knew it would probably be a tough day. When we got to the ramp the north wind was blowing 20-30 mph with capping waves at the ramp. I spent the 1st hour or so running around marking spots hoping the wind would die down later in the day. The water temp ranged from 65 on the upper end to 58 by the dam. Fishing for crappie in about 8ft on the upper end we caughht a few stripe bass but no crappie. After lunch we decided to fish for bass out of the wind and caught 4-5 short fish on crank baits and plastics. I think we could have found better bass in the wind but it was to strong to position the boat. We ran up in some creeks down by the dam and noticed the water temp was 65. The crappie were holding to brush back in the creeks any where from 2-6 ft. We caught several on crappie magnets and minnows with four nice keepers. If we realized this pattern earlier in the day we could have ended up with a lot more keepers. It was a tough day on the water but we caught fish most of the day just not many keepers.
