4/2 Report
I fished today with a college friend who is getting into bass fishing tournaments. He doesn’t have a boat yet but fishes with his dad alot back home in Knoxville, TN. I’m fishing a few small tournaments with him on Priest this year just for fun. Today was a ROUGH first experience for him as the high winds and “mini” cold front combined for a tough combination. We did manage 4 keepers and placed 2nd so it ended ok I guess.
We caught fish on almost everything but nothing developed as a pattern. Most fish were caught on “aggressive” moving baits–cranks, spinnerbaits, swimbaits–in 1′-5′ of water. We couldn’t get a sniff on top water. Most everyone in the tournament struggled with the 20-25mph winds which made fishing very difficult.
We went down lake which is an unusual choice for me but after reading reports it seemed it was our best option for success. We caught about 12 fish today with 4 keepers. We didn’t have any big fish and mostly fished points and rocky/boulder banks with less wind on them (enough wind we could stand as the 25mph winds were unbearable).
I hope some of you had a better day than us. Percy Priest has always been a tougher challenge to me compared to Old Hickory. Whenever I think I have a game plan figured out it never works. This year my most productive area, up past Fate Sanders, has been terrible from what I’ve read/heard. This was my first bass trip out on Percy Priest this year and it was a challenge. It looks like another windy cold front next Saturday so hang on tight. Water temps were in the mid/upper-50s. At this rate, spawn may not happen until the end of April/beginning of May.
