Today I had a great time fishing with a wonderful man from Kenya who does ministry work for teenagers. It was a very memorable day, as he was able to catch his first fish ever!

The water is now less than 1ft from summer pool and 67-69 degrees mid lake. The water clarity has been clear in most areas of the lake. However, some coves and creeks have muddied quickly due to the flash floods we have been having.

Our first spot was on the right after the 3rd point(the really long one when coming from Four Corners. There is nothing special about this bank, it is just a flat rocky 200 yard stretch of rocks. I almost always put my boat in 5ft-7ft and make cast to the bank. Today we were fishing with 1/4oz shaky heads and Texas rig finesse worms(Green with gold flake) and baby brush hogs(green pumpkin purple flake). Down that stretch we caught 3, including 1 keeper and missed several others. A storm moved in on us and we headed towards Four Corners for protection.

After the storm passed we motored over to Mouse Tail Island. Fishing the north bank out of the wind I kept the boat in 5ft-7ft. We fished 100 yards with the same lures and caught 3 more short bass. The gentlemen from Kenya(Peter) did a great job working the lure and setting the hook for guy that has never held a rod before!

After 45 minutes we headed to the back of Hong Hong Island. We idled behind the island from the right side and went all the way to the back behind the smaller islands. Fishing in 1ft-3ft we cast poppers(shad color) and rattle traps(shad color) to schools of bait being fed on by white bass, hybrids and largemouth bass! We had a ball catching fish after fish!!! No giants, but tons of fun. Run-off from one of the coves in the back muddied up that area quickly, but that did not stop the fish from feeding!

It was an awesome afternoon teaching and watching these guys catch fish for the first time! As mush as I love fishing and am addicted to it, it was nice to think back and remember how exited I got when I first started fishing. We are all given an opportunity to pass this great sport to someone…possible the younger generation. I hope you take an advantage of it…..your be glad you did.
