Bass and Crappie 4/10 and 11
I had Friday off and was fishing solo so I tried a few different things on both Friday and Sat. I was starting towards Stewarts Creek ramp but decided to try Jefferson instead. I started out trolling 1/32 jig/grub combos in Motor Oil and John Deer Green. I trolled the flat right out front of the ramp and tried to hit the outside of the TWRA markers while marking my next few passes with waypoints. WOW…there are a lot of brush piles along that flat. My first pass was very good catching 8 crappie with 3 keepers. I worked that pass for the next few hours and ended up with 7 keepers. Wind picked up so I decided to try the A rig again for bass. Starting at the Jefferson pump house throwing the A rig and spook, I caught a few small bass on each. I finally hooked up with a big girl after a hour or so and she weighed in at 4-2. I then decided to work my way to Spring Creek to do some more trolling. I trolled in SC for another few hours and caught tons of short crappie and a few more keepers. I worked all the way to the back and tossed the A rig again after breaking a few trolling lines. Caught another nice bass back there on the rocks, just over 3 lbs. A rig in shallow rocky water has really been working for me for keeper bass.
Sat morning I tried the same trolling paths at Jefferson and caught 6 nice keepers right off and then headed towards West fork to try the A rig again. At the blown out bridge I caught a very nice bass pushing 5 lbs. Slammed the back bait on the A rig after hitting the blades first and coming back when I dropped the rig at the boat to give it another chance. I caught another short bass there and a 7 lb striper that destroyed my A rig. All 3 hooks were in that fish and it felt like a rock coming to the boat. I was off the water at 10:30 am for a honey do list. Great day for a short day. Jefferson was not very busy in the morning but full at 10:30 when I left. Nice to have a little time to launch when I was alone. Stewarts ramp has been crazy for sure.
I have a feeling we have missed the shallow trolling bite since most of my crappie were spawned out but I could be wrong. I have not found large numbers of keepers in 3-6 foot like last year but the rain and water levels have messed things up a bit. Looking at my log from last year the weather was much more consistant in April and we had great days with large numbers of keepers in small rock coves. With the rain this week I am hoping to get out one afternoon but who knows. Great reports this weekend all, thanks for all the info!
