Crappie Fishing Saturday MorningPosted by tnbassman10 on April 10, 2015 at 5:33 am
Any advice on what to do on Saturday? I’m going to take my dad for about 4 hours Saturday morning. This will probably be my last crappie trip of the year as my bass tournaments crank back up after this weekend and I won’t have another chance until well after the crappie go back deeper. I would be thrilled with 10-20 keepers to have enough for a couple meals.
I know that people have been saying to fish points in the mid lane but that didn’t work for me this morning. By fishing points in 2-4ft, are you sitting in 5ft+ and casting as close to the bank as you can? Hats what I’m doing. I almost feel like in bass fishing–which is much more natural for me–which makes me think I’m doing it wrong. I’m just frustrated I guess. The only thing I can seem to catch anything off of is publicly marked structure.

TNBass if your sitting in 5 feet of water I bet the fish are behind you and under your boat. I think when people say they are catching them 2-4 feet deep thats how deep they are fishing, but in deeper water. I caught a lot of fish in 8-14 feet of water yesterday, but fishing 3-6 feet deep with minnows/bobbers and casting crappie magnets.

Thank you Brian. I’ll try to back off some tomorrow. You going out again?

Like I posted in the other thread, everything I was able to catch was in a little deeper water off brush in those pockets & behind the island. I was surprised they weren’t as shallow as I expected and after I caught a few I knew they weren’t super shallow as some people have said and was able to catch them more consistently but all shorties. Hopefully I’ll do better tomorrow.

I had hoped to go back out this weekend at some point, but my wife has a lot of things she wants me to get done so its not looking good. I sure wish I could.

I have been catching some in 8ft-14ft out of brushpiles neat long hunter boar ramp and the bank to the right once you pass the no wake coming out of long hunter cove. Tight line minnows or Crappie Magents (purple/pink) in 12ft-14ft off the chunk rock bank.

Brian(s), have the crappie already spawned and moved back deep? Why are they being caught in the 10ft+ range? Did it happen that fast this year? It seems like their already late (from what I know). I know Brian Carper, you’ve caught em up in the creeks up shallow in as early as mid March in years past. It just doesn’t seem like many have been catching them up there this year, well not as many as in years past from what I can tell.

They are not on fire in the creeks as previous year, but I still catching many…44 keepers yesterday. They are still shallow and think it will be that way for several more weeks. However, you can always catch some in 10-14ft…they live and spawn out there too.

Let us know how you did tbassman.
Brian, were you in Stewart’s creek or back in fall/spring?

I ended up having to fish alone today. I went to Fate Sanders to grab some minnows and the tournaments out of there were delayed due to fog. I waited around as well. I fished from 615-645 around Fate Sanders marina. I then went over to Pooles Knob and caught several fish about 4ft deep in 8ft of water near brush. I had a few good ones. Then I headed to Hong Kong and had the same amount of luck there. Finally, I headed to the cove around past Bryant’s Grove. I caught about the same there. There were a ton of boats out. I ended up catching about 30 crappie with 14 keepers, 5 bluegill, and 2 stripe. I caught everything about 3-5ft in about 7-10ft of water on casting jigs and minnows on a bobber (holding it with my foot as I casted the jigs). I had 2 doubles during the day and it was quite a show seeing me try to do that. I looked like a puppet master. I may have had too many irons in the fire but I tried to either fish 2 bobbers with minnows or a minnow and a jig at the same time. I casted jigs and let a minnow float most of the day but about 10o’clock, they completely got off the jig bite and I went to having two bobbers out at different depths. I ended my day at 11:30 b/c I had a lot of work around the house I needed to get done. All in all, I’m extremely happy as now I have a few meals worth of crappie. I dont think I’ll get to but I’d love about 1 more trip like that to finish off my crappie year.
Side note: Only 1 of the 14 crappie I cleaned had mature eggs in it. Some didn’t have any eggs that I could tell and others eggs were very immature.

I forgot to post about the size. I hardly used my measuring board today. It was strange. They were either well short (8″ or so) or so big I didn’t have to measure them. My smallest keeper was 11″. My largest was 13.25″. I had 7 (out of 14) 12.25″+ so some very good slab crappie for my standards.

Great to hear tnbassman! I told you you were sitting on the fish. Glad it worked out. I’ll be out there tomorrow morning.

My father in law may fish Woods tomorrow afternoon and I’ll go with him if he does. Hopefully one more batch of crappie before I put the magnets and minnows away.
Good luck tomorrow. Let me know how it is.

Caught 15 keepers this morning from daylight until 11:30. It really slowed down at around 8:30 and we caught a ton of shorts. Good day by my standards.
