Anyone have a report on smallmouth fishing in the Cumberland below OH damn? I’ve only fished the river once or twice this year, but in the past have done good at times south of the Old Hickory Blvd bridge.

Also, anyone fish the river west of downtown? I haven’t tried it yet, but I know there’s a decent amount of backwater areas. Just wondering if it’s worth going out that way to catch some bass (largemouth or smallmouth).

Thanks in advance for the help.

I haven’t been on the river in a couple of weeks. So, I don’t have any recent info.
I work downtown and can see the river from our offices. There are tons of giant schools of shad working the surface around downtown. As for fishing west of town… I assume you’re talking about the stretch from Bordeaux down to Ashland City. There are a ton of backwaters down there. We used to fish in Sam’s Creek and Brush Creek a lot before I got a newer boat. We caught a lot of nice fish down in the backwaters. However, I prefer to fish either around Bordeaux on the main river or spend my time between Neely’s Bend and Old Hickory Bridge. I was hoping to fish the river this weekend, but with all the rain today, I might go to Priest instead.

I can’t imagine sitting in an office watching schools of bait surface…..that must be tough! Brian

Thanks for the reply. We ended up catching close to 20 small ones last weekend. The most consistent areas were at the mouth of the feeder creeks on small spinners, crankbaits and jigs. I was going to go again this weekend, but as you said, figured it be high.

Which stretch of the river did you fish?
I’m assuming down towards Ashland City and the Harpeth River based on your reports of fishing creek mouths.
Or were you between Nashville and Old Hickory Dam fishing Mill Creek, Stones River, Manskers Creek, etc?
    thanks. j.

I started around Scottsboro and worked back towards the ramp I launched off Annex Ave. Hoping to get back out as soon as I can.

I usually fish it a good bit. Usually from stones river down to lock two. I’ll run further toward downtown. Have caught some good smallmouth, but mostly about 20 small fish to every decent smallmouth. Believe it it not we have caught some good ones on the rip rap right in front of riverfront park before.

I fished up further toward oh damn but just haven’t spent too much time up that way
