With my boat still in the shop I decided to take the pontoon out for a few hours today. We fished solely for hybrids with some success. We started in Bryant’s Grove where the water was 47 degrees with 2ft visibilty. With the pontoon in 25 to 50 feet of water we trolled the mouth with Alabama Rigs and single swimbaits on a 1/2 ounce swimbait jig heads. We used Zoom silver and white flukes and keitech swimbaits. I trolled with trolling motor at 1 mile per hour for an hour watching a boat catch five hybrids and another boat catch one. We did not have but two bites, however one of them was a 40-plus pound flathead catfish that we landed and took some pictures.
Next we motored in front of Hong Kong Island and had two more bites that did not stay hooked up. Our lures were trolling 15 to 20 feet down 20 yards behind the boat.
Next we tried in front of Long Hunter Cove where the boat ramp is with zero success.
Our last spot was in front runt of Mousetail Island facing Hobson Pike Bridge. With the boat in 30 to 50 feet of water we caught one 5lb hybrid, a short largemouth and smallmouth. We noticed there were a bunch of birds diving on shad over near Four Corners. We motored over and started casting swimbaits. We had a few bites and then I hooked up with a 13 to 15 pound hybrid. I landed the giant and proudly took several pictures. We headed in because it started to rain hard. It was nice to get out, however I can’t wait to get my boat back so I can dial in on the bass and hybrid down lake.
