I made it out to the lake today and to say it was nasty is an understatement! All the rain from yesterday rose the water almost a foot! The wind was 15 to 25 mph out of the North and upper 30’s to low 40’s. Launching from Jefferson Springs boat ramp the water was 50 degrees. I wanted to see what the river looked like so I cruised up to the East to West Fork. The water was moving swiftly and chocolate milk until you got to the West Fork. There it was not as muddy, but quickly after you could see the water moving with dirtier water coming down.
I motored back to Spring Creek where we fished last weekend. The water cleared up to 1′ visibility. When I entered the Creek it was 56゚. Once entering Spring Creek I motored 200 yards in and stopped on the right bank. I picked up my Alabama rif with all white Zoom swimming fluke jrs, which I threw all day, and put the boat in 10 to 12′ of water. I cast into 3 to 5′ retrieving slowly. The 1st 100 yards I did not get a bite. Once I reached the PVC Pole in the center of the creek I fished the left point adjacent to the pole. Sitting in 12 to 16′ of water I cast into 3 to 6′ retrieving all around they point into the drop off. I caught 4 bass including 2 keepers and lost another. I continued down the rock wall having one more bite that did not hook up. The next two hours I fished back further, but only caught 1 short bass! The further back I went the muddier the water got. The fish did not seem to be active in the dirty water. I motor back out and tried a few of the of first spots catching 1 more short fish and missing 2 others….. 1 of which felt like a giant! After 3 hours I heading in. I tried one more spot at the Smyrna pump house, but the current was so strong it was pointless.
The lake will probably come up several feet with all the rain! I was soaked, cold, and ready to go in. It was a cold and wet morning, but glad I got out to catch a few fish and put a report up. I hope everybody has a Merry Christmas!
