After buying a 2005 Stratos 200 in Sep 2014, I started doing some reserch on Fishfinders and Trolling motors. Talked to many people and salespeople and settled on a HB 899SI, HB 859DI and a Minn Kota Terrova with Ipilot Link. In May I took a on the water course on using the HB’s to locate structure and fish but today 3 months later must admitt that so far the SI & DI have not proven to be effective for me. I fish mostly OH, KY, GU lakes and believe the GPS Lake Master / Navionics has helped a bunch in finding places to fish and that the sonar is effective.

On Jan 14th, I had the opportunity to fish with someone that used a Lowrance HDS 9 Touch. I found the SI & DI on that unit to be very useful in locating fish and the GPS & Sonar were also a lot more readable. On the DI screen the I could actually pickout fish (footballs) and see that they were suspended off the botton.

I have approx $2,000 invested in the HB’s and Switch…so before I sell out and start over I would value your opinions on both HB and Lowrance.

    Thanks, Jim

I don’t have either, I use a Raymarine Dragonfly and it works pretty well. This is the first summer I’ve really been using down imaging so it’s pretty rare that I actually see a group of fish, turn around and catch ’em at this point.

If you want to start a war, you could post this same question on Bassresource.com’s forums and I’m willing to bet the server might blow up, haha!

I’ll be getting a new boat soon and will be in the same boat with electronics so I’ll be interested to hear what you come up with. Good luck!

If I was starting over after seeing both HB & Lowrance in action I would 100% buy the Lowrance HDS9 or HDS12 Touch series. If for no other reason, to me, the screen is like watching HD TV as opposed to watching regular TV.

Now as for trolling motors, I have owned only Minn Kota…the Fortrex and the Terrova…I will never go back to a foot petal again.

    My 2 cents…good luck Jim

Jim I have an HDS7 and love it. For me it’s easier to use and easier to read. But I have always been a Lowrance guy. I would love to have HDS12. If you decide to make the switch I believe you’d be happy, just my opinion. Dakota
