Fished saturday in the OHPP tournament trail. We launched out of Shutes Branch. The water was stained to muddy due to the crazy pop-up thunderstorm from the night before. I would guess that the water was up about 1ft or so from summer pool.

    Fishing:
The fishing was tough. Out of 40+ boats, there was only 3-4 limits brought in. We only caught 8 bass all day long but 7 of them kept. All of our fish were up very shallow, VERY shallow. All the keepers except 2 were bucks though. Our biggest fish was 3.5lbs. Smallest was 2lbs. Decent sack. All our fish were caught on aggressive baits. I’m more of an aggressive “power” fisherman while my partner likes pickin’ em apart with finese stuff. He really struggled. He didn’t catch a fish until noon when he switched to a jerkbait. All-in-all, it was a fun day. I know the Weekend Series champ had 25lbs of Smallies from the river in downtown but we enjoyed a 1st place finish with 12lbs just as much.

    Tight lines, boys.

Do you have any more info about that Weekend Series event?
A guy at work told me that an OH event was won with 25lb of smallies. I told him they must have locked through to the river. Any other info on this?
    Thanks. j.

That was correct. The guy locked through. That’s all I know.

According to a guy I trust from work…
Tramel caught those smallies on the main lake on bluff transitions with a jerkbait. Which is contrary to the reports of him either locking through [which was what I assumed] or using an Alabama Rig. I know that last year on the Weekend Series, you weren’t allowed to lock through to the Cumberland below the OH Dam. I’m not sure what to believe, but I do know that guys have been catching lots of good fish on OH this year on jerkbaits. Specifically the Luck-E-Strike STX’s. If I had to guess a spot where this would work right now, I’d think the ends of the bluff heading back up river when you take a right out of Shutes Branch [aka smallmouth bluff]. Did you hear anything else about it?

Well, there ya go. I was just told he locked through. Man, smallies like that on the main lake of Old Hickory is almost unbelievable!

I have an eye witness that said he watched him catch his fish in sight of the dam on the lake. He also said he saw him catch the 6 and 5lb on the same cast.

It’s funny how everyone hears different stories! He was probably in the steam plant fishing with pink buzzbaits;)

In sight of the dam on the lake side?
I’ve caught some big smallies on a grass flat in front of the swimming area on the DuPont side of the lake. Also have had good success fishing around where the channel swings next to the light point at Dupont. My partner caught double 3.5 and 2.5 smallies on a single cast a couple of years ago in that area with a squarebill. So, I’m not sure an Alabama rig would have been necessary to catch doubles.

The guy that caught the 26 # of smallmouth did not lock through. It was not allowed
