We fished out of Lone Branch on Sunday evening to practice for a Monday night tournament.
Heading down lake out of Cedar Creek, we poked around the pockets on the left side of the main river channel and caught a couple keepers here and there on swim jigs and crankbaits around rocks close to water willows. We ran further downlake and fished a couple of ledges and the hump out in front of Bluegrass. We threw deep diving crankbaits, topwater, and swimbaits. Nothing happening on the downlake ledges. So, we headed back up closer to Cedar Creek. We did get on what appeared to be a good school on a main river hump close to Cedar Creek. I caught a 4lb and a 1.5lb on back to back casts with a large deep diving crankbait in about 5ft of water. Having seen enough to feel confident in the spot, we motored off. All in all, we put together a run of 6-7 spots that I felt comfortable were holding fish. We never fished an area for more than 15mins or so. Once we caught fish or got a bite, we left.

Monday night we launched for the tournament out of Lone Branch.
We ran all of the same stuff from Sunday evening and caught absolutely nothing. I only had 2 legitimate bites [both on the swim jig]. Old Hickory has a funny way of humbling me. I felt we had a good shot when leaving the ramp on Sunday night, but a voice in the back of my head kept whispering that we should have just hammered the fish we had found… Oh well, hope to try it again next week. I’m not sure what ended up winning the tournament, we loaded up quick and got on the road before the weigh in had really gotten started.

More so then Old Hick, I think fishing in-general has a funny way of humbling us! Regardless, it’s too bad that the tournament couldn’t of been a day earlier. What time do these Monday night tournaments happen?

This one is 6-9pm, which works out perfect for me since I don’t have any “headlights” on my boat.
It’s apparently an invite-only deal – about 20 boats. My partner is friends with the guy who runs it. So, we decided to give it a shot.

Outside of the Bluegrass area, I did have some luck last weekend at the mouth of the creek with the Saundersville launch. More specifically, the transition from the bluff wall to the rip-rap on the west side of that creek mouth. I caught four, including two keepers, on almost consecutive casts once I got the right angle dialed in. I’ve always thought those two points at the mouth of that creek looked real good and usually there’s a decent amount of bait in and around that mouth but have never had any look. Maybe now is the right time of year for it.

We fished the ledge and flat directly across the channel from that creek mouth on Sunday.
In the past, I’ve caught some decent fish up there. Nothing last week though. There are a couple of roadbeds and hard spots with several big brush piles scattered around up on the flat. I’ll have to give those points a try. It seems that there are always pleasure boats running back and forth through that area. I’m surprised you were able to fish there very long.

You aren’t kidding! If it’s a nice day, it becomes darn near impossible to fish the main river after 10:00-10:30 (at least in my boat!). And for that reason, this is about the only time I actually look forward to overcast, rainy days.
