So my Dad is coming down from the frigid North Country this weekend for some epic slab fishing (or at least we hope). We’ll be going out Saturday and Sunday, probably launching in the upper end (Fate/Jefferson) of the lake. I usually fish for bass so I’m a bit lost when it comes to the elusive “speck” fishing. I’ve read all of the recent reports but just wanted to each out to everyone for whatever additional tips/reports they could provide.

My initial thoughts are to fish the main channel break around the Jefferson Spring Recreation Area, Spring Creek and/or Stewart Creek. As for the arsenal, I’ll have a little bit of everything, minnows and various plastics rigged on a jighead for casting, a slip-bobber, and/or spider rig.

Any additional insight would be appreciated.

We caught 17 keepers a couple of days ago off a stump in 3-6 ft of water in Spring Creek.

Just casting a crappie magnet or something?

We’ve been exclusively slow retrieving a pink/white jighead (me 1/16th on 4lb test and my son 1/8th on 6lb test) with a pink/white Big Bite Baits triple tail grub attached.

Fish stewards creek and start casting black and chartreuse crappie magnets. If they are not there back off and start casting to brush piles. I got 9 keepers today in 4 foot of water wading steward creek. They are starting to move up but not quite there yet.

The mouth of Spring Creek on the main channel ledge has been producing. Cast 1/16oz jigs with crappie magnets purple/chart into 2-4ft, retrieving into 8-12ft.

I caught 6 in east fork today fishin laydowns in 4-8 ft of water couldn’t find any specific spots that were loaded but the fish I caught were all 12 inch slabs! They were hitting chartreuse and blue jigs and minnows. They should be moving up in big numbers soon and can’t wait!! Good luck!
