Wanting to upgrade my electronics at the console. I sold my Humminbird 898c with side imaging. It was a 7″ unit and was an older unit so now I need to replace it. Want to spend under $1,000. There are several options on the BBC forums for, sale so I think I can find something. I know bigger screen is better, but would you suggest Lowrance over Humminbrid, or does that make any difference? I’m still a novice at best when using these. Thanks in advance for opinions.

I had 2 Helix 10’s on my last boat. Have always been a bird guy (had a 959 and 999 before I got the helix’s). I switched to Lowrance. Humminbird showed fantastic bottom detail but I could not find fish on them at all (common problem). I switched to Lowrance and bought a HDS 9 boat in the box kit. I can see fish now. The bottom doesn’t look as pretty as the birds but the birds never showed me fish. My neighbor had HDS 9′ and we could drive over stuff side by side and compare to my helix 10’s and I switched to Lowrance.

I’d go HDS 9 Gen 2 touch or newer.

Thanks. I Had garmin on my last boat so this is my first humminbird and I agree, I can’t tell what fish are. I never see the arch that all the videos show them to be.

    What is Lowrance structure scan?

Im a Lowrance guy myself….have always thought their fish marks are better. I have heard and agree that the Gen 1 has the best fish picture.

Lowrance structure scan is the down and side imaging. Gen 2 touch and newer has that built into the unit so you dont need the big structure scan box. Gen1 and Gen 2 non touch need the box. thats why I said Gen 2 touch or newer.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was always confused with the talk of structure scan.

Lowerance guy here .info above is all good. Just to let you know there are several nib deals on bass boat centeral. If you buy there and buy used you will normally need to buy transducers fo them. Also the genn3 have lowered the mrsp

That is a good price. Has everything you would need to set up units all in one

What do you think of the Spotlight technology? I’ve been thinking of getting one myself but the reviews have made me reconsider.

I’ll be honest. My neighbor gave me an extra HDI transducer as the trolling motor I had, the transducer spotlight wouldnt fit right. I upgraded to a Fortrex last month and it’ll fit now but I havent gotten around to messing with it and changing it out. I agree that the reviews are very mixed and the people that like it have put a ton of hours in figuring it out. I’ll wind up mounting the spotlight and giving the HDI back but more than likely just use it as an HDI transducer as I dont fish enough or am serious enough to master that.

If you want the spotlight, I’ll trade u for a normal HDI. Mine is still new in the box as I only took it out to fit it and put it back in.

What’s the opinion on one versus two at the console? Would you rather have one big one, or two smaller? I like the idea of one running maps and one running side imaging. Now need to keep swapping.

You can run both on one unit with split screen. Of course the bigger the unit the bigger the splits will be. I had two on console . Did not really care for it. Always trying to look at both at same time. Only time you could use it is at slow speeds. Now with structure over lay. I don’t think you really need two units at console. That’s my opinion .sure there will be ten different answers from ten different people

Makes sense. Part of me thinks it will be clunky and look like crap.

Haven’t done anything yet. Probably going to try and pick up a Lowrance HDS 8 or 9 gen 2 or 3. Looked at BPS today but hopefully I’ll find something good used.
