Today fished with 2 guys from San Diego, CA. We met at Fate Sanders at noon, broke the ice to get the boat in the water, grabbed a cup of coffee and hit the lake.

Even with the freezing temperatures I thought I would continue with what has been working for me, but I was not sure how that would pan-out. We started in Sister Cove fishing the left bank. The water temp dropped from 46 to 41 the last two days! Casting Minnow 2.5’s in craw, thread fin and sexy shad we fish 200 yards with no takers.

I knew I needed to be in the warmer water in the back of Spring Creek, so we saddled up and bared the freezing boat ride. When we arrived we were happy to see the 52-55 degree water temp. We start at the finger coves on the left across from the big flat in the back casting Minnow 3.3’s. After 1 hour we fish all the way to the back with not bites. I figured we needed to slow down, so I tied on 1/4oz. shaky heads with a 4″ watermelon Zoom Trick Worm. The first 15 minutes we caught 3 and had several bites at the mouth of the spring branch. After 20 minutes and not another bite, I motored back to where we started at the finger coves, trying our worms there. 30 minutes, no bites. I told my clients I have more confidence on the other side of the channel, so we trolled across. We started on the mud flat fishing up to the rocks(heading towards the back). I picked up my Spook 4.0 Blue Lightning(being that the water temp was 54) and started casting. My second cast, BOOM, a nice bass blew up on my bait and missed it. I threw back to where I had my strike and worked the spook a little slower…BOOM, he got it this time, 2.5lb! I tied the spook on my client’s rod and the next 15 minutes he had 2 big strikes that did not hook up. I picked up my Minnow 2.5 sexy shad and landed a 3lb! Moments later the other client caught a 3+lb largemouth on a Spook 4.0! The next 45 minutes we caught several other fish on our spooks, Minnows 2.5s and rattle traps(most were smaller). The sun started falling behind the trees and it was getting dark so we had to leave.

All and all I was very pleased with the trip. The air temp was in the 20’s and we were knocking ice off our rods every cast.

    Brian,

Are these the finger coves you mention?
