Crappie fished with three clients yesterday from 6 to 10am. We ended with 14 keepers and maybe caught 20 total. We started around Hong Kong Island on the flat in front. Fishing four brush piles from 11ft – 16ft
with live minnows pulled 2ft-3ft off the bottom we caught just a couple. Next we moved through the LaVergne pumphouse cut through and fished a couple trees on the west bank of Ponderosa Island and over near Long Hunter State Park. We picked up a couple bluegill and one crappie. At this point we’ve been fishing for an hour and a half and only had two crappie in the boat. It appeared it was going to be a very tough day. We moved over to the flat across from Bryant’s Grove Cove near the little Island and got on two trees in 15ft and caught 6 keepers out of each! We also called several other fish. The last 45 minutes we searched for bass and found some on the left point at the mouth of Lamar Hill. Keeping the boat and 12 to 15 feet of water we cast 1/4oz shaky heads with Zoom avocado lizards and Norman Drep little N crankbaits in chartreuse shad. We caught three bass and two others in that short time frame! It was a good trip with enough crappie for them to have a fish fry and for a young new angler to catch his first bass by himself on artificial lures! Looks like the weather is going to cool down a little bit starting Friday. Can’t wait to fish without sweat dripping off my elbows!
