Yesterday I was back in hunt for smallmouth bass with a client.
We started fishing on the left bank at the mouth of Bryants Grove Cove. There is a ton of chuck rock that comes out into deeper water. Casting green pumpkin 1/4oz shaky heads and 1/4oz jigs into 2ft-4ft of water for over an hour, we only had one bite that did not commit. We moved over to Bryants Grove long point that comes out on the right. With the boat in 12-18ft, casting into 4ft-8ft, we dragged the same lures back slowly. There we caught our first bass on shaky head, 1.5lbs.
Our next spot was the bank across from Long Hunter boat ramp. We fished the entire bank with Minnow 3.3(Red Craw and Craw color pattern) and shaky heads. Near the fish attractor buoys near channel I lost a good fish in the brushpiles near the bank. 25 yards into cove we hung into a good 2.25lb smallie on Minnow 3.3….he slammed it! 25 yards further, BOOM, nice 2.5lb keeper largemouth on Minnow 3.3. We fished the entire bank with the boat in around 8ft, casting to the bank.
We motored over to Smith Springs and fished near Anderson boat ramp. In the pocket to the left of the boat ramp, we caught another smallie on a shaky head in 5ft of water! We fished around to the sea wall to the right on the boat ramp with no bites.
Our last spot was back up lake, just past the Hobson Pike bridge. Fishing around the little rock island behind the bigger island, we started casting shaky heads. After 15 minutes and no bites, we picked up our Minnow 3.3’s again. Casting into the rocks in 2ft-3ft and retrieving into 5ft, we caught two nice bass on the backside of the island. One was a 2.5lb smallmouth in 3ft and the other was a 2lb largemouth in 2ft! We also caught a 4lb drum:)
The temperature is warming…finally, and the fish are becoming more active mid lake. Hopefully this next front does not mess things up again!
Go get’em guys!
