Today was a great day on the water!!! I fished for 6 hours with some clients. We had a good sack and lost a giant 6lb at the boat….I know, another big fish got away story.

We started in the cove across from Fate Sanders. The last two days I have seen over 12 blue heron on the bank and finally decided to give it a try. Casting buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, we caught one short fish on a buzzbait in 2ft of water. We did not get another bite, but there were fish busting all behind us and round us. I think if we would have backed off and cast rattle traps and crankbaits we would have caught a few more.

We stopped in the second through and fished the left point. Casting same lures into 2ft and retrieving into 6ft we caught 2 more and lost another on trap.

Next we tried the cove across from the Youth Camp again. Going down the left bank we caught 2 and lost a couple on a rattle trap. There were a few more fish on the structure scan in 8ft-10ft, but nothing like last week. We kept our boat in 8ft-10ft, casting into 4ft.

We idled out and motored to the end of the bluff wall across from Bryants Grove boat ramp(there is a pvc pole on that point) and started going down the bank with spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and rattle traps. Fishing in 2ft-4ft we caught 2 and lost another. After we finished fishing the bank, we trolled out into 10ft-30ft and started casting to brushpiles and stumps off the sand bar/hump. I switched to a 3/4oz football head shaky head with a blk/red Baby Huey(I cut off one link to shorted a little). My client hooked into a 6lb that jumped out of the water and all of our jaws dropped!!! He fought the fish to the boat and right at the trolling motor he came out of the water 2ft and threw the trap!!! What a fish……another big fish got away story..haha. We stayed at that spot casting into 5ft on the sand bar and dragging into 20ft. The next hours we caught 8 more, including two 3.5lbs and a 2lb! The bite died down and the wind really picked up so we made a move.

We motored to Stewart Creek to the back boat ramp and fished for 10 minutes before the muddy water discouraged me and we moved into the ski cove in Stewart Creek. Fishing the left bank for 300 yards, we kept the boat in 6-7ft casting to bank. I fished with a Hoppys 1/4oz blk/blu jig with Paca Craw(blk) and clients used texas rig worms and lizards. We caught 5 short fish in the shade from the over hanging trees.

Lastly, we tried the big main lake point at the mouth of Stewart Creek and had no luck(too windy) except for a 10lb gar that was hilarious to watch my client reel in…I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes:)

Thanks for a fun awesome day on the water guys!!!!

I am catching a lot of buck bass up shallow in lamar hill. Looks like I need to get my deepwater baits ready for the bigger fish.
