Has anyone ever caught a mean mouth bass (largemouth/smallmouth cross) on Priest? We were fishing around Hong Kong last night and my chatterbait got absolutely destroyed by this fish. He hit it so hard the snap ring on the front of the bait came open. He ripped the arms and pinchers off the craw trailer. When I got him in the boat he had the mouth of a smally, but his body looked like a largemouth. His color was greenish brown with a very distinct vertical line. The only thing I could think of was a mean mouth. He fought unlike anything I have ever caught.

Checkout the link below. Apparently these “Meanmouth” have been caught in Norris Lake over in the East part of the state. As vicious as both of those species are, it’s almost scary to think about what a combination of the two would be like!

Yes, that fish Saturday night hit like nothing I have ever seen. He was stripping drag like it was nothing and I keep a fairly tight drag with heavy line. The damage to the bait was the most impressive part. I have read stories where they have actually tried to bite swimmers because they are so aggressive. If they are that aggressive, one would ask why not breed for the hybrid and stock lakes with them, but I would imagine they would kill a shad population rather quickly.

I bet the swimmers might have something to say about it 😎

Ha…yeah…puts a whole new meaning on live bait. 🙂

I’ve never caught any Meanmouth on Priest, but have caught them on the Cumberland River before.
I’m not 100% certain that they are genetically Meanmouths and not some other hybrid, but they typically look like a really green smallmouth, but without the little spotted lines that Kentucky spotted bass have. They look really similar to Coosa River Spottted Bass but with the mouth of a smallmouth. Even really small ones will absolutely hammer your bait [mostly jigs and tubes in my case]. I’d say over the past 6yrs of fishing on the Cumberland, I’ve caught maybe 10 that I would say were definitely the Meanmouth. The largest was around 2lbs.

I have never personally caught one, but I know how smallies and spotted bass fight. I would love to see more of these in our lakes.

I highly doubt you will ever see this hybrid species knowingly stocked in any lake.
