The last two days I have chased the crappie and bass. You can definitely tell the colder air temperature is changing things.

The last two mornings I have crappie fished from 7am-11am. The water temperature is now in the low 60’s at 3ft below summer pool. Each day we ending with 12 keepers, including a couple nice hybrids today! All of the keepers came from the Long Hunter area. There are several brushpiles along the point in 9ft-14ft. Next to Long Hunter on the west of Ponderosa there are are few trees in 12ft-14ft that coughed up some giants. Witht that being said, here are some areas that were dead for us: flat across from Hong Kong Island, Youth Camp area, Spring Creek area, Lamar Hill area.

The bass fishing yesterday was okay. We started in the back if Fate Sanders marina. Keeping the boat in 2ft-5ft we cast orange Bandit 100 crankbaits, yellow BPS shallow cranks, and shad sqaurebill cranks. Fishing the entire back center area we caught around 6 bass with one around 3lbs. There are tons of shad back there now. These shad start in the middle of then cove in the morning and work themselves shallow throughout the day. Rattle traps have also been a good baits…just make sure you keep your rod tip up or reel really fast to prevent from getting snagged every cast.

Next we moved to the flat in between Spring and Fall Creek and fished the wind blown bank for 15 minutes. With the boat in 3ft-5ft we cast the same lures with no success.

I moved to Lamar Hill and parked the boat in the back left cove in 3ft. Again with the same lures we caught 3 short bass off the long point adjacent to cove. All the fish were snuggled up against rocks in 2ft.

With the sun falling behind the trees we motored to the hump at the no wake buoys in front of Fate Sanders. Casting directly to the bank around the sand and boulders we caught 3 spotted bass on the right point and a nice 2.5lb smallmouth on the back side of the island!

All and all, okay day! The fish were behaving more like fall bass chasing shad. This weekend will be packed with a high school national tournament. Hopefully Monday will be a good day!

What were you using to catch the Crappie? Just minnows?

Sorry. Most of the crappie came off minnows tight lined off the bottom 3-4ft. However, I did catch a few on a pink 1/8oz jig with a spicy mustard Crappie Magnet.
