Got out Wednesday afternoon for a very short trip 4pm till 6:30pm. The water temp. was 71 degrees and it was mostly
Sunny and 84 degrees with just a slight south wind. I launched at SandersFerry ramp, and motored into Drakes Creek and went all the way back to the Mallard Point ramp and started fishing my way back out of the creek. I started fishing grass and wood with a frog, but after about 20 minutes
with no action, I switched to a Strike King 1.5 square bill in sexy shad color, and swapped over to rock and gravel points but after 30 minutes and only 1 small bass, and not long to fish left I tied on a Strike King red eye shad rattletrap in sexy shad and continued on fishing rock and gravel, catching 2 more short fish, I got my first small keeper about 16″. When I got to the bank just before Drakes Creek boat dock which is about 6-8′ just off the bank, I fished on down that bank and past the marina on toward the mouth of Drakes Creek and caught 3 more short fish that were 12″-13″ , when I got to the deep rocky bank that runs along Sandes Ferry Park I had the boat in 18′-20′ fow throwing into 4′-5′ when I checked the time and only had about 15 minutes left before dark. On my next cast I hooked what seemed to be a good fish but it didn’t jump it just headed for deep water and a thouht it was probably a Striper because it was moving fast, about the time it went past the front of the boat it finally jumped and I saw it was a big smallmouth, after a few more jumps and a good fight I got it in the boat,it measured 22 1/2 inches and weighed 5.20 lbs on my digital scale. That is my pb smallmouth on Old Hickory. I finally got in a trip that I caught a few fish, only 2 keepers, but better than I have done there in a long time. My short trip turned out to be a really fun afternoon fishing.
