November 24
Yesterday I fished from 8am-4pm. With the recent success in the river, I headed back into the West Fork to the long rock point I mentioned last report and started casting a 1/4oz Strike King Jigs and a H2O square bill crankbait(3ft-5ft) in sexy shad color. We only got one bite, but it was a beautiful 3.5lb smallmouth! We continued up the West Fork fishing the rocky banks with no success. Then we moved over to the East Fork and tried the 840 bridge and other rocky bends for hours……no luck.
I traveled back down into Spring Creek where we caught some the day before on topwater lures. Our first lap around the back of the creek we caught one short bass on a point with a square bill crankbait. I thought we would try topwater lures since we had luck last trip with them and the fish started biting! We took two laps around the back(probably the last 200 yards of creek) with buzzbaits(black and chartreuse) and a Heddon Jr Spook(blue and clear). We had 12-15 strikes and caught 8. I lost a 5lb-6lb largemouth on my spook when he broke my line:(
As the sun started to fall we motored to Larmar Hill. One strike on a spook.
It was an okay day. Once again, we saw a few nice fish and lost a few, but there were long periods of time without any action sometimes. I heard bluff walls and the ends of the bluff walls are producing quality fish with jigs and crankbaits. With the cold weather this week, I think I might fish a little deeper with a jig next time out.
