Saturday I fished the BFL super tournament out of Flippers. I had three areas I wanted to fish all day where I found fish earlier in the week or last week…..also
were we caught our keepers fishing the tournament the week prior. The water temperature was in the mid-70s. The water was up several inches on Wednesday and they dropped it 15in 2 days up to the tournament! I don’t know that it affected my fish, but they didn’t bite.My first spot was way back in Cedar Creek where the week before we caught 12 to 15 bass and 4 keepers in 2 hours. I headed straight back, put my boat in 1 to 2 feet of water and picked up my 1/2oz Hoppy’s black buzzbait. We started going to work for an hour around the isolated grass without any action. I picked up my half ounce Strike King real shad color rattletrap and started burning it and yo-yoing it through the grass. 20 minutes later I caught my first keeper! It wasn’t long after my co-angler caught his first keeper as well! We moved around the flat and 20 minutes later I caught my 2nd keeper. I felt like everything was right on track. We weren’t catching big fish, but I felt like I could have 8 to 12 pounds after catching these 14 to 15 in bass throughout the day. Nevertheless, that didn’t happen.I didn’t have another bite for 3 hours!
I made a move to Spencer Creek and turned into the cove on the left just before Laguardo ramp. I went to the back where I found a school of fish Wednesday and caught several on a rattle trap, including a couple keepers. On this day they were not schooling like before so I fished the adjacent docks in 4-8 feet of water with a shaky head, but could not trigger any bites.
I moved over to Davis Corner bridge and fished the mouth (rip rap). Putting my boat in 3 to 8 feet of water we fished the drop in front of the bridge. There was tons of bait and bass schooling here and there. We tried squarebill crankbaits(Bandit 100) in chartreuse shad, rattle traps, shaky heads, green pumpkin half ounce jigs, and spooks in red and white. I only caught one dink.
Next I went back to our first spot in Cedar Creek. The wind picked up and was blowing on the flat and I thought that’s just what I needed to change things. For the next 2 hours we covered the entire flat two times and caught one short fish. I decided I had to abandon the spot again!
We headed up to The Cove above the Steam Plant on the left. Casting rattletraps with the boat and 6 to 8 feet of water to the boulder rocks I caught another keeper and my partner caught his second keeper as well. We finished our day and headed in.
My partner had 3.4lbs and missed the cut by a couple ounces and I had 4.3lbs and missed the cut by 3lbs. Very frustrating day as I thought we were on a roll early in the morning. I would have never thought we couldn’t get any more keepers after we had 3 in the bait at 8:30am. Oh well…..I’ve got to lick my wounds and saddle back up. Im heading to Lake Guntersville for a Spro frog tournament at the end of month with my manager from work. He’s addicted to fishing worse than I am so we got work to put in so we can get the W hopefully!
