The last two days I have had bass trips in the morning. The bass have been fairly active the first couple hours. Each day we started behind the Smyrna pump house, casting Hoppy’s Hawg Buzz 3/8oz buzzbaits. Friday we caught around 8, including a few missed strikes and Saturday we caught 2 back there, including a 3lb largemouth. It appears the bass back there are diminishing though……not getting as many bites as we were. The next time the bass should be active there is when they start lowering the water down to winter pool.

The next area that has been producing is the big flat on the right before you enter Spring Creek. All the way in the back it is really shallow(1ft-2ft), but there is an area where it is 3ft-4ft. The shad are concentration there and being caught on rattle traps. Yesterday we caught 12 bass casting 1/4oz and 1/2oz chome/blue traps.

After the sun rises high, the fishing has been tough. We landed a few decent bass behind Fate Sanders on crankbaits and plastic worms in 4ft-6ft Friday, but many areas have not produced anything.

Something to keep an eye on, I saw a bunch of fish schooling on the surface off the long point in front of Stewart Creek boat ramp yesterday.

The 7 day day forecast shows highs in the 60’s! This is great. The water is currently in the low 70’s in the morning and mid 70’s by afternoon. Once the water temperature drops into the 60’s the shallow will bite will be good throughout the entire day!

Awesome couple of days out. I was out there Saturday and did ok but not as good as Thursday. We caught around 10 Saturday and prob 12 Thursday but fish were better Thursday. Can’t wait til the temp drops. I am ready for that good fall bite.

I caught a 3 pounder on a squarebill tonight. Hope the bite will get a little better soon in the backs of the creeks.

I was also out there Saturday evening from 4:00 to 6:15. I found it to be tougher than earlier in the week. Managed to catch 3 on a buzzbait in 2 to 4 ft and had maybe 4 short strikes.

We fished from Elm Hill to Hong Kong Island from safe light to 11am on Sunday.
Fishing buzzbaits in the backs of pockets we had decent success ~10 fish – 2 keepers – couple short strikes and 3 shook off. The key was that all fish were caught off of scattered rock in less than 2ft of water. Not in or around weeds/grass or wood. Also, fish were only on the white buzzbaits and nothing on walk-the-dog style lures. I missed a good size fish on the buzzbait in the pocket by the Lavergne Pump House. However, it was probably 5-10ft out from the edge of the dead vegetation. After about 10am everything shut down. I thought that with the cloud cover, the fishing would hold up, but it wasn’t the case. The bait also seemed to not be up shallow. There were huge schools of threadfin out over deeper water [25-40ft]. We also saw a few big schools of 6-8″ gizzard shads in Elm Hill and around YMCA cove. No success on squarebills or mid-diving crankbaits though. Should be getting better over the next few weeks!

I saw you at fate sanders today taking photos of bass this afternoon. I was in that camo jon boat catching bluegill. What did you catch those bass on?
