October 10
With my boat in the shop I had to borrow a friends boat to knock out a couple crappie trips. On my last trip we caught around 50, including 28 keepers!
Our crappie were caught in 10ft-19ft of water. It seems some big fish have started moving into shallower water and others are still deep. I used a Crappie Magnet all day while my clients tight lined minnows and Crappie Magnets. The best CM colors were chartreuse and clear and “Dude Special” fished on 1/8oz CM jigs in red.
We started on brushpiles on the back side of the first cut through(coming from Fate Sanders). The back flat of that island has several brushpiles scattered around.
Next we fished around the Youth Inc. bank. I have around 8 trees that produce at times there. They have not been producing much recently, but today we got a few.
Our next spot was the flat in front of Hong Kong Island. A few trees there produced a few in 10ft-12ft
Our last spot was across the channel from Bryants Grove cove. We hit several trees and had our best luck there in 18ft.
All of the crappie we caught were either tiny or 11″-14″! The water temperature was 69 degrees, finally in the 60’s!
Tomorrow I will be out for a few hours around 10am after I pick up my boat from the shop(I got my boat wrapped with the guide service). I am going to go into the river and try flipping a jig in some springs and run offs. Hopefully I hang a few hogs and have a good report to post!
