With all the recent rains and temp fluctuations, where is a good place to start fishing around Old Hickory.
A couple of weeks ago, it seemed like the fish still hadn’t made it out to the drops/ledges on the lower end of the lake [109 Bridge down to the OH Dam]. I’m planning to put in at Shutes Branch tomorrow morning and fish until mid-day.
    Thanks in advance. j.

    Simplecircuit,
You are correct, with the all the recent rain and cooler temps, it is a different summer than most. Not all the bass have moved out into the deeper water. I have heard of several good bass caught on the ledges this summer, but have heard just as many caught shallow around the short grass that grows around the shore in coves and creeks. If I were putting in at Shutes, I would try the rip rap in the back of the cove with topwater baits early and/or then plastic worms. Then, I would focus on shore grass with spinnerbaits and plastics worms. There are definitely a lot of active bass shallow.

Fishing the Bassmaster Weekend Series on Saturday, we caught all of our fish on swim jigs around timber just north of the 109 bridge.
The biggest fish we caught was a 3.05lb Largemouth caught off of wood on the edge of a grass bed against a rip rap bank. There were some good bags brought in from the lower end of the lake including a 4.45 Smallie caught off a drop near the dam. Water temps were still in the very low 70’s on the main lake on Saturday and not much warmer in the backwaters and creeks.
