I fished a tournament on Saturday morning out of Sanders Ferry. This was the first time I had been on the lake in just over a month and it had been almost as long for my partner. Neither of us had time to pre-fish so we kinda of went in blind so to speak. We were lucky enough to get on a successful pattern early. That pattern was flipping super shallow grass and wood cover. This got us our limit by 10:00. We needed to cull so we decided to move out deep to look for some bigger fish. While scanning a ridge, I stumbled upon a large rock pile that was LOADED with fish that appeared to be good size. We backed off and I made my cast with a 1/2oz football jig and pulled in a solid keeper. We ended up catching a few more good fish off of that spot, including a 5lb 7oz largemouth.

My partner and I ended up winning our tournament with a total weight of 14lbs 8oz and I also took home the big fish prize. It was an all around amazing day on the water. Maybe pre-fishing isn’t as important as I had thought. haha

Great fish and congrats! What part of the lake did you fish? Did you stay down by sanders ferry?

I went straight into Drakes Creek from take off and never came out. I planned on moving up towards bluegrass, but we got on good fish that were biting in Drakes so we decided not to leave.

    congrats.
the grass in drakes creek seems to always hold fish. i fished it a couple weeks ago for the first time in years. it’s funny, since getting a faster boat and gaining range, i have abandoned so many productive areas. what’s that old saying? “don’t leave fish to find fish”

Congrats on an overall awesome day.

Did you have luck shallow with any particular bait, or just any beaver style bait? Also, where were most of the fish in the grass, around the edge or farther back?

I know exactly what you mean and that is exactly why we never left Drakes on Saturday!

I start off flipping a Zoom Z-Hog in green pumpkin and my partner was flipping Havoc Pit Boss. After no luck for a while I made the switch to a Strike King Baby Rage Craw in summer craw color. The baby rage craw with a 3/8oz tungsten weight was my most productive grass bait. My partner ended up making the switch to the 4″ Rage Craw in green pumpkin and caught several fish on that.

Nearly all of the fish we caught were close to the outside edge of the thickest part of the grass. I believe they were sitting right along the grass/shade line ready to ambush bait.
