Sept 26
The last couple days on Priest I have mostly fished for crappie. However I did fish for bass a few hours this morning.
Our first spot this morning was the back of Savage Branch. Casting poppers and buzzbaits to the bank while sitting in 3-5ft we had zero bite(even though a friend of mine told me they caught 20 bass the evening before on topwater baits in 2′). The water was 74 degrees…..warmer than last week.
Next we motored to the Four Corners cut through going up lake. We stopped on the right bank and fished the same depth with 0 bites again. As we approached the channel there was a lot of bait and gar in 8-10ft, but I could not get anything to strike.
We saddled up and headed towards the back of Fate Sanders. I figured surely we could catch some back there! We fished 150 yards on the right bank in the back with only one bite, a 2.5-3lb on Red Eye Sexy Shad. This fish came out of 3ft while we were sitting in 5ft of water.
Our last spot before we crappie fished was the Weakley Lane Bridge. I idled past the left bridge pillar and saw a lot of bass sitting 10ft down. Recently I have not been able to get the fish to come to the surface, but have been catching some on my A-rig after letting it sink for 10 second they retrieving slowing. Today……nada. The only bite we had there was on a Texas rig worm cast to the concrete and letting it sink for a few seconds.
As for the crappie. They have been kinda tough the last few days. We have been catching a lot, but most are short. Yesterday I was out with a regular client and we had 25 keepers, which is good, but we fished probably 25 brushpiles in 6 hours! It seemed 16ft-20ft was the best depth for us yesterday light lining live minnows and using Crappie Magnets (1/8oz with “Dude Special magnet”). Most of the fish were around Ponderosa, Long Hunter, Hong Kong Island and the Youth Camp.
Tomorrow I will be fishing the Saturday morning tournament with BCGS guide Jacob Jewell. I will post a report this weekend on how it went and where we caught our fish!
Tight lines and be safe!
