Back in the day my brother and I used to catch them on a pumpkin speedcraw with 2/0 hook. Probably helps explain all of the short fish. Also, a LakeFork ringfry (pumpkin/chartreuse) on a larger hook was productive. It seems that LakeFork changed the scent a few years ago and made the body thinner. Anyway, they don’t work like they used to. Since we usually fish at night, a black bandit could usually provoke a smallie strike on the right point, while a thin jig, tubecraw or many different plastics rigged Texas dragged from one ledge to the next works on the left side from maybe in 200 ft on out to where the big rocks start. Used to catch lots of small fish in the big rocks also, but not much luck lately.
