I agree with simplecircuit….it is old fashion, but that is how they used to do it. Another strategy is to look for items nailed to trees on the bank….cans, red reflector tape or ribbon. This indicates brush that someone put out directly in front of that marker.

If it was me, I would save up for a cheap depth finder or try ebay.
